Located in the Uttarkashi district in the state of Uttarakhand, Dodital is one of the most beautiful lakes in all of India. The lake is known for its majestic view and crystal clear water. Dodital Lake also has the distinction of being one of the few lakes where the Himalayan Trout can be found. In fact, it is from this trout that the lake has derived its name. The local name of trout here is Dodi, hence the origin of the name. The place is also of religious importance as according to myths, it is here that Lord Ganesha was born. Accordingly, the lake is also called Dhundi-ka-tal which translates into Lake of Lord Ganesha.

Dodital is a freshwater lake. Assi Ganga rises from Dodital and joins Bhagirathi. The confluence is at Gangotri.

Local languages are known as Garhwali and Hindi.

How to Reach

  • If you prefer to travel by plane, the nearest airport is at Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun. From there, you can either take a taxi or a bus to cover the remaining portion of the journey. Cars for hire are easily available just outside the airport. The distance between the airport at Dehradun and Dodital can take quite a long time to cover. It is connected to the major airports all over the country.
  • The nearest important railway station is Rishikesh Railway Station. The rail station at Rishikesh is connected to the station in Delhi, and the other major stations across the country. The fare for interstate travel will be between Rs.1600 and Rs.3000 depending on the class you choose to travel in.   • Dodital Lake is quite well connected by road. There are direct routes from Dodital to Uttarkashi and other parts of the state.
