Located in the town of Bhimtal in Nainital district in the state of Uttarakhand, Bhimtal Lake presents one of the major tourist locations in the state. The lake is known for its picturesque surroundings and beautiful landscape. Bhimtal Lake has the distinction of being the only lake district in India. The lake supports a large variety of aquatic wildlife. In addition to that, the lake is also one of the stops for the Himalayan birds as they migrate during the winter season. Combined with its natural beauty, and the diversity of fauna and flora, Bhimtal Lake is a place that is well worth visiting.

Earlier, one of the largest lakes in Kumaon, unchecked delvelopment is forcing the waters of Bhimtal to recede every year. But the paths through the hills around can still offer a peacefrul commune with the nature and some lovely views.

The surrounding area of the lake presents some of the most beautiful sights that you can find anywhere. The lake has an island which is situated almost at the heart of the lake area. The lake has a huge aquarium, which at one time used to be a restaurant. The aquarium harbours a wide variety of aquatic life forms and is one of the major attraction to the tourists.

The town of Bhimtal in itself is quite well worth exploring. It is a very old town and once formed a part of the famous silk route. Thus the ancient town has a history of its own to tell to those who are interested in finding about it. Though quite close to Nainital, the lake town of Bhimtal is quite the opposite of Nainital and presents a serene and peaceful landscape. Thus, if you are visiting Bhimtal, you can find yourself wandering quite aimlessly in the middle of all this beauty, just taking in all that Bhimtal has to offer. The Bhimeswara Mahadev Temple is a popular tourist destination in Bhimtal. According to legends, it was built by the Pandava, Bhima. The temple was renovated in the 17th century.

The region is quite well developed and getting around is fairly easy. The public transport system is quite good. You can move about by renting a car. Car renting services are fairly numerous and comes at a reasonable price. You can also hire bikes and cycles and explore the locality on your own.

How to Reach

  • If you prefer to travel by plane, the nearest airport is at PatnagarAirport. From there, you can either take a taxi or a bus to cover the remaining portion of the journey. Cars for hire are easily available just outside the airport. The distance between Patnagar Airport and Bhimtal Lake is quite minimal. It is connected to the major airports all over the country.
  • The nearest important railway station is Kathgodam Railway Station. The rail station at Kathgodam is connected to the station in Delhi, and the other major stations across the country. The fare for interstate travel will be between Rs.1600 and Rs.3000 depending on the class you choose to travel in. If you are travelling within the state, the fare will be somewhere between Rs.150 and Rs.300. You can book your tickets from sites like irctc.in, makemytrip.com, and yatra.com.
  • Bhimtal Lake is quite well connected by road. There are direct routes between Bhimtal and Nainital, and other parts of the state. You can get up on a bus from any of the important towns or cities and take a bus which will take you to Bhimtal. From there you can go to the lake. Alternately, you can also rent a taxi or a car for the trip.

Nal Damayanti Tal is a beautiful lake quite nearby. The place is offers a beautiful view and is also of religious importance. Hidimba Parvat is a small cluster of hills and well worth visiting.
