160 km away from Bhubaneswar, Tikarpada is situated on the bank of the river Mahanadi in the district of Anugl, in the state of Orissa. Sprawled over a huge expanse of land, the sanctuary has a total area of almost 800 sq. km. It is located just at the mouth of Satkosia Gorge where Mahanadi takes the plunge into the Eastern Ghats. The region is famous for its wildlife sanctuaries and the various adventures that it has to offer to the tourists. Mountain on one side and Bay of Bengal on the other, Tikarpada is strategically placed to enhance its beauty by using all that nature has to offer.

If you are planning a trip to Tikarpada, the best time for you to go there will be between December and April. The weather is quite cool and you will not be hampered by sudden and torrential rain. Also keep an eye open for the various local festivals, which are a wonderful way to get acquainted with the local culture.

If you are planning to take a trip to Tikarpada, make sure that you plan your trip well because there are just so many things that you can do and explore in this region. First up is the famous wildlife sanctuary at Tikarpada. Tikarpada Wildlife Sanctuary is famous for its population of gharials. These small crocodiles are being rehabilitated here in an attempt to stabilize their population which has been on the decline for a long time. The gharial sanctuary has a wide variety of gharials. Also present are different species of turtles, and snakes. The sanctuary is also a known habitat of various species of the big cat family. Though it has become difficult to see a tiger in the recent years, you just might get lucky. Other animals that can be found here are leopard, gaur, elephant, spotted deer, sloth bear, Sambhar, nilgai, wild dogs, and choushingha. You will also be greeted by the sight of various species of birds, like jungle fowl and Indian pitta. Along with visiting the sanctuary, you can also take part in fish angling, white water rafting, and boating. Tikarpada is an exciting place for tourists to visit as they have the choice of either taking a peaceful tour of the sanctuary or take part in adventure sports. If you feel like it, you can take part in a trekking expedition that will lead you through the central area of the region.

 
Getting Around

Getting around Tikarpada is a bit tricky. Your best bet will bet to rent a car from the local tourist agencies or car rental services. Cars can be based on hourly basis or on the distanced travelled, and charges are calculated accordingly. Buses can also be taken, however the frequency can be erratic. You also have the option renting bicycles and paddle your way to wherever you want to go.

How to Reach

  • If you want to take a plane to Tikarpada, you have to get off at the airport at Bhubaneswar and from there either you need to take a bus or a cab to Tikarpada. The airport is well connected to the major airports across the country and can be easily reached.
  • As there are no proper railway stations at Tikarpada, if you opt for a train journey, you have to get off at Bhubaneswar station. From there you can either take a bus or rent a car to take you to your destination. Details of train can be obtained and ticket booking can be done through sites like irctc.in, makemytrip.com, and yatra.com.
  • If you are planning to go to Tikarpada by road, you can board on of the numerous tourist buses that leave at regular intervals. Buses can be taken from Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, or Rourkela. Buses range from luxury ac buses to non-ac buses and fare is calculated accordingly. From Cuttack it�s roughly a half an hour journey by cab for an approximate cost of 300 to 400 INR.

Tikarpada has a lot of places to explore. You can take a trip to the Satkosia gorge where the majestic Mahanadi River plunges into the heart of Eastern Ghats, creating a magnificent sight of water breaking over the hard rocky banks. You can also plan a trip to the nearby deciduous forests and roam around in the peace and serenity that the jungles have to offer. There is also a jungle safari that you can be a part of. If you are willing to go a bit farther, you can go to the city of Bhubaneswar where you can marvel at the majestic architecture of the ancient buildings.
