Located in the southern part of the state of Sikkim, Ravangla is a quaint little town in the laps of the Eastern Himalayas. The town is one of the upcoming tourist spots in the state of Sikkim and is known for its scenic beauty and the great view of the Himalayan range that one can get from here. The town of Ravangla is located at an altitude of around 7000 ft. from the sea level. The little town of Ravangla is sandwiched between the two major tourist spots of Sikkim- Gangtok, and Pelling. Ravangla is also the starting point of a trek to Maenam La Wildlife Sanctuary.

 
Travel Tips

The best time to visit Ravangla is during the summer season. The weather is warm and pleasant around this time. Carry light clothes I you are visiting in summer. In winter the temperature is quite low and can drop below zero degree.

If you are planning a tip to Ravangla, be prepared to have your mind blown by the beauty with which nature has decked up this place. Ravangla is one of the most scenic towns in Sikkim. The terrain is dotted with alpine vegetation and a large number of flowers of different colours. If you are tired of seeing the city landscape, Ravangla is sure to be like a breath of fresh air to you. The place is known for its orchids and rhododendrons. If you are a bird-watcher, Ravangla is sure to mesmerize you. Located at the foothills of the Himalayas, Ravangla attracts a large variety of birds of different species. Some of the commonly seen birds here are Blue-fronted Redstarts, Whistling-thrush, Verditer Flycatchers, Dark-throated Thrush, Blue Grey Bushchats, Green-backed Tit and White-browed Fantails. Babblers,Laughingthrushes, Cuckoos and Hill Partridge are also seen around this place. Moreover, the endangered Satyr tragopan is also a resident of the forests around Ravangla. The Ralang Monastery is a noted Buddhist monastery in the region. It is located at a distance of six kilometers from the town of Ravangla. From Ravangla you will also get clear views of some of the famous Himalayan peaks, like Mt. Kanchenjunga, Mt. Kabru, Mt. Pandim, andMt. Sinialchu.

 
Getting Around

The best way to get around Ravangla is by cars. You will not find public transports. However, you can hire motorbikes from the local people. Bicycles are also rented and is one of the popular ways of commuting around the region.

How to Reach

  • If you prefer to travel by plane, the nearest airport is at Bagdogra. From there, you can either take a taxi or a bus to cover the remaining portion of the journey. Cars for hire are easily available just outside the airport.
  • The nearest important railway station is at Jalpaiguri. The rail station at Jalpaiguri is connected to the stations in Delhi and Kolkata, and via them to the other stations across the country. The fare for interstate travel will be between Rs.1600 and Rs.3000 depending on the class you choose to travel in. If you are travelling within the state, the fare will be somewhere between Rs.150 and Rs.300. You can book your tickets from sites like irctc.in, makemytrip.com, and yatra.com.
  • There are direct car routes between Gangtok and Ravangla. You can get up on a taxi or a jeep from any of the nearby important towns which will take you directly to the hill station here. The distance between Gangtok and Ravangla is about 70 km. You can also get to Ravanglafrom Siliguri. It is at a distance of five hours drive. Direct routes are not available but you can easily do break journey.

 
Surrounding Attractions

There are plenty of other beautiful places that you can explore around Ravangla. Borong is a nearby village which can be reached by trekking. The village offers a great view of the Himalayas. Temi Tea Estate is the famous tea garden in the region. It is the only tea garden in Sikkim. Tashiding Monastery is another popular tourist spot. The monastery built in 1716 is about 40 km from Ravangla.
