If wildlife is what you are passionate about, Kishanpur Sanctuary is going to be your dream come true. Located in Lakhimpur Kheri District of Uttar Pradesh, the sanctuary is just a four and half-hour driving distance from the city of Lucknow. Sprawled across an area of 227 sq. km. Kishanpur Sanctuary forms a part of the Dudhwada Tiger Reserve. Despite being quite close to human habitation, the sanctuary is a welcome change to those who are tired of the city landscape. The entire area is covered by dense forest interspersed by lush meadows.

 
Travel Tips

The best time to visit the sanctuary is during the winter season. The temperature is quite pleasant at that time of the year. You may want to visit in summer, but in that case be prepared to face quite a high temperature. Also carry a light luggage as you will need to walk around a lot.

Kishanpur Wildlife Sanctuary is a must visit location in the diary of anyone who wants to enjoy his time in the midst of nature. The sanctuary is home to a huge variety of animals, some of which are in the list of endangered species. Tigers are the main attraction of the sanctuary, as it is a part of the tiger project. However, you can also get a glimpse of animals like the Indian rhinoceros, leopard, and barking deer to name just a few. This sanctuary is known for the wide range of animals that can be found here; so you can be sure that you will never have one dull moment. From Sambar deer to wild boar, and Ratel or Honey badger to hog deer, the list of animals just goes on and on. Swamp deer, Black-necked stork, and Bengal Florican are some of the other endangered animals that you are likely to spot during your trip here. While animals are plenty in number, the birds are not far behind in terms of population. Starting from woodpecker to treepies, black-headed orioles and grey tits, you are likely to come across a myriad variety of birds in the sanctuary.

 
Getting Around

Getting around Kishanpur Sanctuary is not very difficult as it is quite close to the town of Mailani. Public transportation is mainly provided by bus; you also have the option of availing of the train service. In case of your looking for private transportation, you can hire cabs and cars. The local tourist offices as well as travel agencies can help you to rent a car. And if you are feeling adventurous, you can take a ride on the vans and the rickshaws.

How to Reach

  • If you want to take the aerial route that is not a problem also. The nearest airport is at Lucknow which is around 250 km from Kishanpur Sanctuary. From the airport, you have the choice of either taking a bus or a cab to the sanctuary.
  • If taking a train journey is the way you like to travel, you can book your seat and get off at Lucknow which is well connected to the rest of the country. From Lucknow station, you can either take a bus or a cab. Otherwise, you can get off at Mailani itself, and from there go the sanctuary.   • If you want to go to the sanctuary by road, you can hire a car or take a cab from Mailani. You can also get into a bus from either Mailani, or Lucknow. From Lucknow it a three and a half hours journey at an approximate cost of 1900 to 2000 INR. You can also take a bus from Palia to Lakhimpur Kheri, and from there go to the sanctuary.

 
Surrounding Attractions

Though you are quite likely to be overwhelmed by the sanctuary at Kishanpur, there are plenty of other places to visit in the region. Most famous of them all is the Dudhwada Tiger reserve, of which Kishanpur Sanctuary is a part. In there you can see animals like Indian elephant and wild hogs. If you are interested in history, you can visit the Surat Bhawan Palace, which houses an impressive number of historical relics. To quench your thirst for spirituality, you can visit the Frog temple, another nearby attraction. And that is not all. You can pamper yourself by taking a ride on an elephant, another feature of a trip to this part of the country.
