Haflong or the ‘ant hill’ as the name means is located in the state of Assam. It is the only hill station in Assam. The picturesque town lies in the lap of the Eastern Himalayas. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the north-eastern country known for its undulating plains covered by lush green vegetation, it rises to a height of around 1683 ft. above the sea level. While the mountains form an integral part of the beautiful landscape of Haflong, the terrain is also decorated by a number of beautiful flowering pants. There are many exotic birds here which are of great tourist attraction. Haflong is a town and headquarters of Dima Hasao in India in the state of Assam. It is the only hill station in Assam.

Commonly spoken languages are Hindi, Dimasa, Hmar, Zeme Naga, Biate, Kuki, Khasi, Bengali, Nepali and Hrangkhol.

The best time of the year to visit Haflong is during the months between April and June. At that time the sky remains clear and the weather is also pretty moderate. Winters around this part are very cold and it is not advisable to come here in winter.

Haflong is the only hill station in the state of Assam. As such, there are a number of amazing locales that the place has to offer to the visiting people who come to this place from different parts of the world. The curving rivers that flow down the mountainous terrains, the bluish mountain peaks in the distance, and the orchids of various colours that grow in the mountain slopes, all these make Haflong an exquisite sight to behold. If you are an adventure-sports buff, Haflong should definitely feature on your list of places to visit. The space provides several modes of adventure sports, like paragliding, and trekking. The Haflong Lake, situated at the heart of the town is also one of the places to visit. It is the largest water body in the state of Assam. There are several orchards around the place that you can make a trip to. These are also very good places to get acquainted with local cultures and traditions. Borail Range is quite nearby and is well-known for its forest covered terrain. Another interesting place is Jatinga. The place is of great interest to the tourists due to the mysterious birds of the same name which fly from an unknown place to this region to commit suicide. Mailbong, the former capital of this region is also a place of tourist interest. Moulpong is a nearby view point from which you can get a beautiful view of the town and the adjacent areas.

Getting Around

The public transport system in Haflong is not very reliable. You should do well to arrange for private modes of transportations. There are cars for hire that can be availed quite easily. Buses ply on the area however their frequency is quite erratic.

Despite being a popular tourist destination, there are a few hotels in Haflong where you can book your accommodations. The hotels cost quite low and the service offered is quite good. Some of the popular hotels in the region are Elite Hotel, Haflong Tourist Lodge, Eastern Hotel, and Joysowary Hotel. The hotels are quite popular amongst the people who come to visit the place. However, it will be advisable to do the bookings beforehand as the hotels get full during the holiday seasons. If you are willing to stay in Silchar, there are a number of options open to you.

How to Reach

  • Guwahati Airport is the most important airport in the region. The airport is connected to various parts of the country. The other airports around the place are at Silchar, and Dimapur. You can take a flight to any of these places. From the airport, you can reach Haflong by taxi or hired car. From Silchar it about two and a half hours by cab and from Dimapur its more of a 10 hour journey by car. The charges for cabs will be 1000 and 4000 INR respectively.
  • The nearest important railway station is at Guwahati in Assam. From the station, Haflong is about 300 km. The distance can be covered by bus or taxi. You can also take a connecting train from Guwahati to Haflong Station. This is the best way to go if you want to travel by train.
  • The roads are well developed and connected to the other cities in the north-eastern part of the country. There are several buses which leave regularly for Haflong from all the nearby important towns and cities. You can get in a bus from Dimapur, Diphu, Guwahati, and Jorhat. The tickets will cost you around Rs.300. However, the bus journey might prove to be quite taxing for those who are not accustomed to bus journeys on mountain roads.

Sri SriKanchaKanti Devi Temple is quite nearby. The temple is a popular destination amongst the tourists and is one of the holy spots around here. You can also go to Bhubaneswar Temple in Bhuban Hills in Silchar. Maniharan Tunnel is a nearby tunnel which is of great religious importance as well as tourist attraction.

The state capital city of Guwahati is 7 hours drive away. You can visit the famous Kamakhya and Umananda temples. The Assam State zoo is not to be given a miss either.
