Garampani Wildlife Sanctuary

Located in the KarbiAnglong district of Assam, Garampani Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the oldest sanctuaries that have been built in the country for the preservation of wild animals. In total, the Garampani Wildlife Sanctuary has an area of around 6.05 sq. km. The wildlife sanctuary here is famous for the various beautiful waterfalls that adorn the landscape. As the name suggests, Garampani, meaning hot water, also has several hot water springs and these also adds to the attraction of the place. The wildlife sanctuary here is known for its population of golden langur, and hoolock gibbon.

The best time to visit Garampani Wildlife Sanctuary is during the months between October and March. During these months, the temperature is quite pleasant and you will be able to explore the locality all day long. While Garampani Wildlife Sanctuary is quite known for the different varieties of animals that can be found here, the landscape is also a very beautiful one. It is adorned by a number of waterfalls and hot springs. Taking a stroll through the park, exploring all the nooks and corners is one thing that is sure to give you much pleasure during your trip to the national park here. The sanctuary here is known for the variety in animal life form that can be seen here. Amongst the animals that you are likely to catch a glimpse of are tiger, clouded leopard, leopard cat, leopard, jungle cat, Sambhar, barking deer, Asian elephant, Gaur, Bear, Sambhar, Rhesus macaque, Chinese pangolin, jungle cat, civet, Indian fox, capped langur, golden langur, mongoose, Hoolock gibbon, and Wild pig. The sanctuary is also quite rich in avian life form. Some of the birds that can be seen here are red jungle fowl, kaleej pheasant, parakeet, dove, drongo, myna, Green imperial pigeon, hill myna, jungle myna, brown fish owl, barbet, woodpecker, eagle, kingfisher, bulbul, and minivet. While the avian and mammalian life form is quite rich, the park also plays host to several varieties of reptiles. You can spot pythons, cobra, and monitor lizard.

Getting Around

Getting around the place is quite easy. The public transport system is quite developed. There are regular buses that connect the place to the nearby cities and towns. Hiking is another very good way to explore the various places. You can also hire cars or rent taxis to take you around. Cars can be rented from the local tourist agencies or rental car services.

Places to Stay

If you are travelling to Garampani Wildlife Sanctuary, the best place to stay is in the forest rest houses that are manages by the forest department. The rest houses are located such that you can easily watch the animals. If you are looking for a hotel, there are few hotels in Golaghat that you can look into.

How to Reach

  • If you prefer to travel by plane, the nearest airport is at Dimapur in Nagaland. From there, you can either take a taxi or a bus to cover the remaining portion of the journey. Cars for hire are easily available just outside the airport. The distance between Dimapur and Garampani wildlife Sanctuary is around 55 km.
  • The nearest railway station is at Furkuting. The rail station at Furkuting is connected to the stations in Guwahati and Tezpur and via them to the other statin across the state. The fare for interstate travel will be between Rs.1600 and Rs.3000 depending on the class you choose to travel in.   • The national park is quite well connected by road. There are direct bus routes between Golaghat and Garampani Wildlife Sanctuary. You can get up on a bus from any of the important towns or cities and take a bus which will take you directly to the National Park. Alternately, you can also rent a taxi or a car for the trip. Buses run by the Assam State Transport Corporation make regular trips to the park. The distance between Golaghat and Garampani Wildlife Sanctuary is around 25 km.; Guwahati is located at a distance of 330 km. From Guwahati you can a hire a cab to reach Garampani. The distance is of four and a half hours and can cost about 2500 INR.

The town of Mokhchung in the state of Nagaland is a popular tourist spot. It is famous for being the cultural centre of the Ao people. The town of Okha is known for its cottage industry and well worth a visit. The ruins at Deopahar is another place of great attraction to the tourists.
