Brief

Dudhwa National Park is located in Terai of Uttar Pradesh. The park is located in the Lakhimpur Kheri district of the state and is situated on the border of India and Nepal. Sprawled over an area of over 490 sq. km. the national park is part of the Dudhwa Tiger Reserve.  The park has the distinction of being one of the few remaining places where one can come across the Terai ecosystem. The park also gives sanctuary to a large number of endangered animals, most of which are almost extinct from other places in the country and the world.

 
Travel Tips

The best time to visit Dudhwa National Park is between the months of October and March. The temperature then is quite moderate. If you are planning to visit during summer, be prepared to face high temperature, which can go up to 45 degree Celsius. Another thing to note is that if you take accommodations in any forest resort other than Dudhwa, you have to prepare your own food. However cooking arrangements will be supplied by the resort.

Things to do

Dudhwa National Park is known for harbouring a wide range of animals. The major attraction of the place is of course the tiger. It is also a known habitat of the swamp deer. There are over 1600 swamp deer in the park. The other animals that one can see in the park while visiting are hog deer, Sambhar deer, jungle cat, jackal,spotted deer, sloth bear, tiger, Indian rhinoceros, Ratel, civets, fishing cat, barking deer, and leopard. This park is also one of the few remaining places where hispid hare is found. After thought to have become extinct, this was the first place where they were rediscovered. The barashingha species of deer is also found in large numbers in the park. It is not only the animals which form an integral part of the ecosystem of the Dudhwa National Park. The place is also known for the many different varieties of birds that abound there. In all, there are over 350 different species of birds that can be found in the park. The park also plays host to a large number of migratory birds. Some of the birds that can be commonly seen here are Great Slaty Woodpecker,Swamp Francolin, Bengal Florican, painted storks, bulbuls,black and white necked storks, woodpeckers, Sarus Cranes, barbets, bee-eaters, kingfishers, minivets to name just a few. The park also has several varieties owls and other night-birds. If you are a bird enthusiast, this is one place you cannot afford to give a miss. You can also take a ride on one of the elephants and enjoy the view of the park from your high seat. The entry fee to the park is 50 INR and jeep safaris and elephant rides can booked for 150 and 100 INR respectively.

 
Getting Around

Within the park, cars can be arranged for by the trip organizers. There are also local jeeps that can be hired to take you around the park. In case you want to hire a private car that can be done at the local tourist agencies. As for going from Dudhwa to other places, public transports can be availed of, but they are quite erratic in their frequency. Thus it is best to hire a car or a cab.

 
Places to Stay

If you are looking for accommodations while your trip there, there are a large number hotels for you to choose from. Alternatively, you can also try to book rooms in the forest resort in Dudhwa. However, unless booked well in advance, it might prove to be a bit difficult to get rooms in there.

 
How to Reach

  • The nearest airport is at Lucknow. From Lucknow, you can hire a car to go to the park. Alternatively, you can also take the train and get to Dudhwa station. Lucknow is connected to the major airports around the country, including Delhi and Mumbai.
  • You can also go there by train. The nearest railway station is at Dudhwa. It is connected to Lucknow Station and through it to the rest of the country. From the station, you can hire a cab to take you to the park. The distance is around 4 km. The train fare is between Rs.1600 and Rs.2900. Details of the trains can be obtained and ticket booking can be done through sites like makemytrip.com, yatra.com, and irctc.in.
  • If you plan to reach the sanctuary by road, you can do so by hiring a car from Delhi or Lucknow and drive directly to the park. Cars can be hired easily from local car rental services.

 
Surrounding Attractions

There are a number of other places that you can visit during your trip to Dudhwa. The Frog Temple is a famous tourist spot. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, it is known for its unique structure, modelled on a frog. Surat Bhawan Palace is also well worth visiting. The palace of the former rulers of Singhai estate, it has an impressive Indo-Saracen architecture. Mahant Sewa Giriji Temple is also quite nearby.

Three and half hours away from Dudhwa is the beacon of the erstwhile Nawab era – Lucknow. A wonderful opportunity for all who wants to be in a time warp of larger than life architecture, heritage mosques, buildings.
