Nelapattu Bird Sanctuary

Considered as the heaven for bird watchers, Nellapattu is the largest habitat in South-east Asia for grey pelicans. A part of Kalluru Reserve forest of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh is being reserved to make the sanctuary for the birds. The sanctuary is named after the village by the same name. Northeast monsoon brings 1000mm rain per year along with some of the rare migratory wingers like white Ibis, night Heron, openbill Stork and etc. Most of the migratory population comes from USA, Antarctica and China to beat the cold wave of those regions. Siberian crane, painted stork, spoon bill and other birds are breeding at this ground of India to remove their clan size in a favourable manner. Most of the birds nestle around the foreshore area which they finds perfect residential places for their juniors. It has been estimated than 2000 birds’ species are residing in this sanctuary. Other animals include jackals, spotted deer, reptiles include monitor lizard, snakes, and tortoises are living inside the forest area also. There is a deer park inside the forest is the added attraction of the sanctuary. The sanctuary is famous for its annual flamingo festival which is a three day festival organised during the second week of January. Several cultural programmes, rural sports event and competitions is held during those three days in this region.

  • The sanctuary is open throughout the year.
  • Best time to visit the sanctuary is October to March.
  • Carry light cotton clothes during summer and light woollen clothes during winter in grey shades which can create camouflage.
  • Avoid littering the area with plastic bags or chemical materials.
  • Do not create loud noises or talk in a loud voice. This will create a distraction in the animal’s mind.
  • Avoid going to the area which is restricted.
  • Do not take a stroll or walk in the area by your own.
  • There are food available in the state run canteen. There are state run restaurants also.South Indian foods are available in those places only.
  • Keep off all type of flashes of mobile camera and video camera.
  • Carry repellent creams to avoid the stings of the insects.
  • Carry emergency medicines and kit always.

Things to do

The sanctuary is the largest South East Asian habitat of Pelicans. Other birds namely Spotted Belied Pelican, Spoon Bill, White Ibis, Night Heron, Open Billed Stork, Painted Stork, Little Cormorant and Spoon Bill are spotted here also. Some of the endangered species of birds are nestling in this reserve area of the sanctuary. Mostly spotted specimens include Babblers, Flamingos, Open Billed Stork, Coot, Night Heron and Waders. So, the best thing to do in this area is exploration. Forest departments offer hiring cars to explore the strategic points inside the sanctuary to spot animals. To increase the information about the sanctuary and its neighbourhood, a museum, education centre, library and auditorium with audio-video facility is installed outside the sanctuary.

Getting Around

There are comfortable transportation options are available to reach this sanctuary on a regular basis. Public buses and private cars are available easily.People need to walk inside the sanctuary to cover its area and get a glimpser on its residence.

Two states run guest houses are offering basic accommodation facility to the tourists.state run canteen and restaurants are available for food.

How to Reach

  • The nearest airport is at Chennai which is connected by domestic and international carriers on a regular basis. The sanctuary is within 50 km from the airport.
  • The nearest railway station is Sulurpet which is connected by trains of Indian railway but on an irregular basis.
  • There are public and private transportation is connecting this place with the Chennai city which is 50 km away only. Rental cars and luxury buses are available also.

Surrounding Attractions

Pulicat Lake is the adjacent area to spot birds. This is the only salt lake in this state. Other than the bird watching, there are no surrounding attractions present in this area.
