Kodaikanal is a city near Palani in the hills of the Dindigul district in Tamil Nadu. Kodiakanal is referred to as the "Princess of Hill Stations". Travel Tips

Book cab through hotel for Coimbatore Airport to Kodaikanal. There is no need to book in advance.

Try to reach Coimbatore before 2:00p.m. so that you can enjoy the scenic 4hour drive to Kodaikanal.

Don't engage local tour operators / hotels for site seeing. They tend to cover too many spots for a day.

Arrange a cab for half a day to visit places like Devil's kitchen, Green valley view, Pillar rocks and Pine forest. 

Try to visit Berijam lake during your initial stay reasons being it requires forest department's permission to enter the area and permission is given on daily basis in advance. Spare one day for visit to Berijam lake.

Things to do

The best thing to do in this place is taking a nature walk surrounding the region and study its nature. Much activities are available surrounding the Kodai Lake where people can take up cycling and horse riding. Boating in the lake is available also. There are trekking routes available for the trekkers also. Shopaholics can collect the collectibles from the local market.

Secretive mountain paths, mist and bramble, hedges full of wildflowers, gardens full of roses, placid lakes - Kodai is rich with discoveries. These hills are alive with flora and fauna. The singht-seeing tours might be useful if you are short on time but its best to explore on your own.

Getting Around

Fortunately, cycles and bikes can be hired to roam around the place. If you don't have your own vehicle, taxis are readily available for hire, and the roads are clean and well-maintained.

  • There is no airport at Kodaikanal. The nearest one is at Madurai within a distance of 120 km. tourists can come via Trichy airport and Coimbatore airport also. They are 150 km and 175 km away only.
  • Kodai Road has the railway station which is closest to Kodaikanal. It is 100km away from the hill station.
  • All the southern Indian major cities are interlocked with Kodaikanal by motorable roads. Regular bus services are available from other major cities like Chennai, Pondicherry, Madurai, Hyderabad, Pune, and Bangalore to come to this place. Rental cars or private cars can come also. It will take 11hrs from Bangaluru, 12hrs from Chennai.

It is at the old site of "Fort Hamilton", in the upper Palani hills. The lake, is part of a micro–watershed development project. There is a museum to give an info about the area also.
