Someshwara Wildlife Sanctuary is sitting on the western ghats of district Udupi under state Karnataka. This 88.4 sq. m park is the residential zone for birds like Malabar trogon, Ceylon frogmouth, Malabar pied hornbill and Malabar whistling thrush. The mammals section include Leopard, Wild Pig, Sambar, Spotted Deer,Tiger, Wild Dog, Jackal, Gaur, Barking Deer, Lion Tailed Macaque, Bonnet Macaque and Common Langur. This place is the living places for King cobra, Python and Monitor lizard also. The sanctuary is closed to Mangalore city of southern India. Several species of flora and fauna can be found this wildlife sanctuary also.

Travel Tips

  • The park visiting hour is 6AM to 6PM. If possible avoid going to the park after 3PM. The park is big. So you may not be able to enjoy the viewings.
  • Best time to visit the park is from October to April. Avoid going during the rainy season.
  • Avoid littering the area with plastic bags or chemical materials.
  • Do not create loud noises or talk in a loud voice. This will create a distraction in the animal’s mind.
  • Avoid going to the area which is restricted.
  • Wear cotton clothes during summer time, light woollen clothes during winter. Keep plenty rainproof garments because you may not know when a sudden splash can make you wet.
  • Keep off all type of flashes of mobile camera and video camera.
  • Carry repellent creams to avoid the stings of the insects.
  • Carry emergency medicines and kit always.

Things to do

People can trek at some of the places around the sanctuary. A trip to the nearby Agumbe can be enchanting. This place has several waterfalls and called as the Cherrapunji of South due to heavy rainfall.

Private cars should be preferred choice of transportation option around this area. There are no other means of transportation available on a regular basis.

Surrounding Attractions

There are not many places surrounding this wildlife sanctuary. Onakabbi falls, Jambluetirtha and Agumbe sunset point are the three places where tourists can make their visit during the trip. There is Kudremukh National park on the south-east part of the sanctuary.
