Sonmarg is a small hilly town of Indian state Jammu Kashmir under the Ganderbal district. The name means of meadows of flowers. Because the spring time wraps this valley with arm full of flowers. This is the exit point of the lush green valley of Kashmir and the entry point of barren dry land of Ladakh. Zozila pass is between these two points. The famous shrine yatra of Amarnathcrosses this town. Sonamarg has historical significances during the trade time between China and India in ancient times. The Silk route crosses from this land. A major tributary of JheelumRiver is keeping this place busy with its magical tune also.

Sonmarg is a hill station in Ganderbal district in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir about 80 km north-east of Srinagar.

Sonmarg gives rise to the three sisters (Kashmir). In its vicinity lies the great Himalayan glaciers of Kashmir valley namely Kolhoi Glacier and Machoi Glaciers. Sonmarg is situated in a valley at the bank of Nallah Sindh. 

However, the main languages spoken are Kashmiri in the Kashmir Valley, Ladakhiin Ladakh and Dogri in Jammu. Most people can speak Hindi as a second language. English is fairly widely spoken among the educated and those involved in the tourist industry.

Best time to visit this land is April to October.

Take light woollen clothes and cotton clothes during the summer time visit.

As weather is mostly cool and unpredictable at Sonmarg pack some heavy woollen clothes with adequate warm accessories is a must during winter time with an umbrella.

Carry enough cash with you as there are very few ATMs available.

There are no bounds in activities available in this area for the tourists. Angling and fishing on the lake water is the best adventurous sport available in this town. There are small trekking routes present to boost the adrenalin of the trekking loving population.

In winter time, the snow provides the opportunity of sledging on the frozen lake also.

Getting Around

Best way to explore the land is by hired cars and feet.

There are tanga service or horse carriage available to take the people around this area.

How to Reach

  • There are no nearby airports at this place. Srinagar has an airstrip which is 81km away. Regular flights are available from New Delhi.
  • Jammu Tawi of Jammu is the closest major railhead connected by trains of Indian Railway on a regular basis. This is 400km away from Sonamarg.
  • Motorable roads are connecting the part with other areas of the state. Hired cars and buses are available on a regular basis. National Highway NH1 is connecting with Srinagar and Anantnag with Sonmarg.

This picturesque beautiful land is called the heaven on earth because of its flawless natural beauty which is mesmerizing all by its offerings. There are some clear blue water lake and green grasslands situated in and around the small hamlet.

Some of the popular tourist attractions are Krishnasar Lake, Bisanasar Lake, Nilagrad, Baltal, Nichnai pass, Yousmarg. Baltal is the grassland area sitting at the foot of Zozila pass. The famous Amarnath shrine yatra can be covered within a day from this point. Nilagrad is the meeting place of the Indus River and a mountain river. The water of this area is red in colour. The people believes it has some magical power to cure some ailments of human beings.
