Brief

Located on the banks of the river Tapti this historical heritage is one of the popular monuments visited by many tourist all around the year. The palace is believed to have been pray too many foreign invasions due to wealth and prosperity of the area. This area was mostly attacked by the Portuguese. Therefore this castle was constructed to protect the place from invasions of these people. The construction was started by Shah Mahmood III, the king of Ahmedabad. This palace is located in Gandhinagar the capital city of Gujrat. It took six years to complete the construction of the fort. It was started in 1540 and the fort was built completely by 1546. This extends over 1 acres of area. The place has magnificence and beauty. The construction was done very carefully and with lots of protection. There are four pillars on each corner of the Surat Castle and these are round structures of about 12.2 metres in height. The walls of the fort are about 4.1 metres wide. To ensure the security all the building materials were bound by iron strips. To protect it from the rustic attacks of the enemy all the joints were filled with molten lead such that it is not perishable. The most striking feature is the entrance that opens to the east and has spikes in the doorway to bar the entry of the enemies inside the fort. The castle has a moat that always has water in it. The castle has a drawbridge for its connection to the water transport. This draw bridge can be closed any time. Thus preventing the entry of the enemies from there. Though the portions of the Surat castle has been destroyed over time yet this stands to be the example of massive construction of the India’s past.  This is a well-known site of different government offices in the present times. The construction of the structure was done with great excellence and planning. Therefore the enemies though invaded after its construction many a times but could not harm the fort much.

 
Travel Tips

The Surat castle remains open for most of the time of the year. Visiting it in the winter months from October to February are the most favourable of all. This remains open from dawn to dusk and on all week days. It is advisable to visit during the winter months because the weather remains pleasant during this time. Summer is the time when the scorching Sun soar overhead. It becomes difficult to visit the details and interesting phases of the Surat castle. A small meal can be kept along.

  • Surat has a domestic airport that connects this with the other important metro-politan cities of Indian. Regular services of flights are available. A cab from the Domestic airports will take you to the Surat Castle.
  • Surat is a prominent Railway station in the western railway Zone. This is also well connected to the other neighbouring cities and states of India. There is to and fro train service from most of the cities. This also has prominent train service from Mumbai to Surat.
  • There are two prominent cities Ahmedabad and Mumbai at distance of 234km and 297 km respectively. This distance can be covered by cars and taxis on a hire basis. The other cities of Gujrat has a good connectivity with the city of Surat. It is also well connectivity with cities of Maharashtra.

There are popular beaches and Shabari Dham frequented by pilgrims. The beaches are namely: Dumas Beach, Ubharat Beach and the Suvali Beach. Snow Park also attracts tourist.
