An Inner Line Permit is required for foreign visitors. Indian Missions, Sikkim Tourism Offices at Kolkata, New Delhi, Siliguri, Rangpoo and District Magistrate office of Darjeeling offers this service.

Foreign expeditions are required to book a peak in exchange of a fee. Country’s apex body Indian Mountaineering Foundation organizes and sponsors the expeditions. A liaison officer from both Sikkim Mountaineering Association and Indian Mountaineering Expedition need to be engaged. These officers are on duty to cover emergency situations and accidents.

A compulsory insurance coverage is mandatory which stands at INR 300,000 per expedition members, INR 100,000 per camp crews, INR 50,000 per porters and INR 20,000 per animal.

All types of local, domestic and foreign expedition team must pay the royalties before starting the expedition. For foreign teams, USD 350 per team of 4 members, USD 500 per team of 8 members and USD 75 for each additional members. For domestic team, INR 15,000 per team of or up to 8 members and INR 1,500 for each additional members. For local team, INR 3,000 per team of or up to 8 members and INR 300 for each additional members.

Your mountaineering wish may not fulfil if you don’t take heavy winter clothes with yourself. Light clothes are necessary too. It depends on the peak you want to climb. Major peaks like Kanchenjunga (8,585m), Kabru can’t be climbed without specially designed winter clothes for climbing. Smaller peaks can be travelled by wearing light clothes during the day time. Woollen socks and long innerwear are must also. Sunscreen, sunglasses, waterproof jacket are needed too. A first-aid kit with all necessary medications must be present with you.

The land of third highest peak of world, Sikkim is blessed by the Himalaya and its plethora of peaks. Sikkim is an Indian state on the eastern side entangled between Nepal on the west, Bhutan on east and Tibet’s autonomous region on north. Another state of India, West Bengal is occupying the southern part of this state also. Gangtok is its state capital. This state is popular because of the Kanchenjunga which can be seen very easily. The High volume of people from the world visits this land to have a glimpse of the proud queen Kanchenjunga. They can succumb the thirst of the adventure sports by availing mountaineering at this place. Tourists can complete their interest of climbing in Kanchenjunga, Sinolchu (6,887m), Kabru,Tinchekhang (5,603m), Lama Wangden(5,868m), Jopuno (6,010m), Frey’s Peak(5,830m) and Byrmkhangse(5,635m) peaks which are allowed for mountaineering. These expeditions need proper planning along with paperwork to get the nod from the Indian Mountaineering Foundation. Local government charges royalties to some of the peaks too. Most affluent time to visit those peaks are May to October.

 
Equipments

One must carry important equipment to avoid any road block during their mountaineering activity. Necessary mountaineering gears like strong hiking shoes with good grips, mountaineering harness, climbing sling with locking carabineers, ice-axe, climbing helmet, telescopic ski-sticks, Prussik loops are required for mountaineering activity. These equipments are available for hire. One must tested and checked before setting for the trip. Several agencies are offering help to solve this need in Sikkim.

How to Reach

  • Sikkim does not have its own airport. Bagdogra Airport of West Bengal is 124 kilometre away which is the nearest. There are daily flights connecting this airport from New Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata. The Sikkim Tourism Development Corporation has launched helicopter service from Bagdogra to state capital Gangtok.
  • Siliguri and New Jalpaiguri stations of West Bengal are the nearest railway stations. They are 125 kilometre and 114 kilometre away respectively.
  • India National Highway 31A is the connection between Gangtok and Siliguri. This highway can be travelled through the bank of mighty river Teesta, lush greenery and valley of wild flowers. Buses, taxis, jeeps are available 24 hours at a legitimate rate. All other attractions of Sikkim can be reached from Siliguri also.

 
Surrounding Attractions

All the four district are boasted with several popular tourist places which can’t be completed within a single visit. In the East district, there are Baba Harbhajan Singh Memorial Temple, Aritar Lake, Bakthang Waterfall, Ban Jhakri Fall, Enchey Monastery, DodrulChoten, Ganesh Tok, Tsmgo Lake, Tashi View Point. Nathula Pass is one of the main interest of this part. In the west district, Khechepalri Lake, TashdingMonastry, Pelling, Yuksam, Varsey, Rabdentse ruins, SangaCholiMonastry, Rinchengpong, Kaluk, Uttorey are present for the delight of the visitors.

In north district, PhodongMonastry, Gurudongmar Lake, Yumthung, Lachung, Lachen, Thangu are equally beautiful to attract the eyes of the travellers. Temi Tea Garden, Namchi, Ravangla, Samdruptse, Borong, Menam Hill are welcoming the visitors at south Sikkim.
