Situated in the BBD Bagh area this is believed to be the central Post Office of Kolkata and Chief Post Office of West Bengal. This controls the most inbound and outgoing mail. This is the most important structure of the city and stands as the landmarks of the city. The site where this infrastructure stands is was the first site of the Fort William. The alley beside the PO was believed to have been the site of the guard house of the infamous Calcutta Black hole. The construction of the building was started in 1864 and it was completed in 1968. The famous architect was Walter B. Grenville.

Things to do

The massive structure is notable for its domed roof. The building also has iconic tallCorinthian pillars. This is located on the Netaji Subhas Road. There is a postal Museum inside the colossal building. This building Houses the museum which is noted for the collection of Stamps and artefacts. These building is of great historic importance. The modern day importance is nevertheless. Built during the time of British reign this massive building has a lot to offer stating from the view of its colossal structure to that of the collection of stamps from all over the world and India of various years.

Surrounding Attractions

The place is formerly called Dalhousie Square. This is abbreviated as BBD Bagh or Binay-Badal-Dinesh Bagh. This is the central business district of Kolkata and there this is termed as Office Para. The Writer's Building, secretariat of the West Bengal government, Royal Exchange General Post Office of Kolkata, Telephone Bhawan, and St. John's Church is situated here itself. The place is locally known as the Office Para, meaning the locality of offices.A large part of the population finds their living here. The square is famous for all the cheap food that the vendors sell throughout the day to the office-workers. At night, the place is very quiet. This is beacause there are no residential buildings in the district.

The St. John's Church's yard has a mausoleum of Job Charnock. This building is believed to be the oldest piece of architecture in Calcutta. B.B.D. Bagh also has statue of famous Maharaja Lakshmeshwar Singh of Darbhanga.
