Situated in the Hoshangabad district of Madhya Pradesh, the Satpura National Park forms the core of the Panchmarhi Biosphere Reserve and is one of the best tiger reserves of the country. Established in 1981, the SatpuraNational Park and Sanctuary brings to travellers a unique wildlife experience. As parts of it still remain untouched by humanity, it is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts who like to observe wildlife at its natural best. Travel Tips

Satpura National Park is open for visitors from 16th October to 30th June. During this time you can enjoy the safari rides and boating sprees in the Park. It is closed for visitors from 1st July till 15th October, so be sure to book ahead. The Satpura Park is for those who like to enjoy wildlife in its most pristine form. If your intention is to spot a ton of tigers, this is probably not the place for you. But if you like the quiet, the calm, the opportunity to observe the Highland Ecosystem in its most ragged, unspoilt form this is the place for you. The place is also sprinkled with a good bit of historical monuments, so history lovers will also get a special kick!

The forest officials organize all kinds of forest safaris at Satpura National Park. There are Jeep Safaris, Boat Safaris, Elephant Safaris and Walking Safaris. While the jeep safaris will cost you around Rs 2500 per safari, the elephant safaris are charged at approximately Rs 500 per person. Take your pick! The forest is a host to animals such as the tiger, leopard, hyena, and the precious Black Buck and White Gaur. Golden jackal, rhesus monkeys, flying foxes, Asiatic big cats and a variety of herbivores bring up the rear. The Satpura National Park is also a haven for birdwatchers and nature lovers with over 13,000 plant species and a remarkable collection of domestic as well as exotic migratory birds. You can book a Bird Watching Tour and enjoy the cornucopia of birds the forest houses. This Park provides one of the best Safari experiences in the country, so do book a safari with the forest officials, preferably the ones organized at dawn.  For the adventurous lot, a Canoe Safari is also a wonderful option.

Satpura also offers scenic relief in the form of numerous waterfalls such as Duchess Falls, Bee Falls, RajatPratap etc. These are popular picnic spots and you will find both families and couples unwinding in the midst of nature. Reechgarh is another local attraction. Visit the Satpura Adventure club in Hotel Saket to book a parasailing tour in Reechgarh, if you are an adventure freak. It is a mesmerizing experience. You can also rent a bicycle and go on bike trails all by yourself and enjoy the Park at a micro level.

Getting Around

Local Gypsies are hired as a norm, to get around the place comfortably. Many agencies provide on-spot rent-a-car services at Rs 6 – Rs 12 per kilometre for 4-6 seater Ac cars. To travel to nearby locations you can also rent bikes from these agencies.

How to Reach

  • Although a small air-strip is available in Pachmarhi, the proper nearby airports are in Bhopal (200 kms.), Jabalpur (250 kms.) and Nagpur city (300kms.). Private car rental services are available at all of these airports, which can get you to the Park.
  • Nearest railway stations for Satpura National Park are Pipariya (50kms), Sohagpur (19km), Itarsi (75kms), Hoshangabad (50kms). Among them Pipariya&Itarsi are important ones as most of the important trains stop there, Pipariya railway station being on the main route of the Mumbai-Howrah line. The Park is accessible by train from most of the major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Agra, Varanasi etc.
  • Satpura National Park is spread by the Jabalpur - Bhopal road, the nearest cities being Bhopal (210kms), Jabalpur (250kms) &Chindwara. There are 3 important entrance gates for Satpura National Park among which the important ones can be reached from Sohagpur&Pachmarhi. Shared taxis are also available from Pipariya at about Rs 50-100 per seat that will drop you to the Park.

Surrounding Attractions

The Satpura National Park is surrounded by other national parks and tiger reserves in Madhya Pradesh such as the Bori and Panchmarhi Sanctuaries. The Bandhavgarh, Kanha and Madhav National Parks are only a few hours’ drive away.

The Chauragarh Fort in the city of Hoshangabad, only 32 kms away from the Park is a must visit. This fort can be attributed to the Gond rulers of the 16th century A.D. In the ruins inside the fort, stand ranital, barracks for keeping the prisoner held, an amphitheatre and the palace of Gond king Premnarain – the grandness of the fort will leave you mesmerized. Jatashankar is also a place worth visiting. These naturally magnificent caves are one of nature’s biggest architectural achievements and will leave you awe-struck!
