Sattal or more commonly referred to as Sattal (which is Hindi for "seven lakes") is a famous interconnected group of seven freshwater lakes located in the lower Himalayan range near the town of Bhimtal in Uttarakhand, India.  During the British rule in India, the area was known for having a tea plantation, one among four in the Kumaon area.

The seven interonnected lakes that make Sattal are named after mythological gods and heroes. The one known as Bharat Tal is only a short distance Lakshman Tal combine to make the actual Sattal lake.

The lake is situated at an altitude of 1370 metres in the Mehragaon valley. The lake is surrounded by dense forests comprising of oak and pine trees, Sattal is widely regarded as among the unspoiled and unpolluted freshwater biomes in the country. The lake is home to some rare migratory birds.

Kumaoni is also used frequently in the city as well as Garhwal.

The best time to visit Sattal is between the summer months from March to May. The weather is perfect for trekking as well as other adventure sports.

Things to do

Apart from the beautiful scenery and other splendours that the place offers, it also provides tourists with exhilarating nature walks, trekking trails that are perfect for adventure enthusiasts, kayaking, night camping, river rafting, jungle safari, and rock climbing, among other activities. Tourists can also indulge in leisure activities like boating, angling and mahaseer in the lakes. A boat ride is one of the best activities to indulge in here.

Getting Around

The best way to get around is on foot by undertaking a trek. Also, buses, taxis and private cars will are the preferred means of transport.

Just6 getting to the Getaway Jungle Camp is an adventure in itself. You take a boat to the edge of the forest and then trek up through lemon, peach, apricot and plum orchards to the amp clearing. 

The tents are here for comfort, with showers.

Facing the Sattal lakes, is preferred by some, but we believe Sattal is best experienced at campsites.

How to Reach

  • The nearest airport would have to be Sattalis Pantnagar airport which is around 61 kms away.
  • The nearest railhead is Sattalis Kathgodam which is located around 33 kms away. There are two runs that run daily from Delhi to Sattal.
  • Sattal is well-connected by motorable roads which connect major cities and towns to Uttarakhand.

A visit to the butterfly museum should be on your list of places to visit. It houses close to 2500 butterfly and moth species which can be found in the region.

The Christian Ashram is another place which tourists should visit as it offers a mixed colonial architecture. A fresh natural spring located nearby called Subhash Dhara is where fresh water comes out.
