Rishikonda is located around 8km from Vishakhapatnam or Vizag. The main attraction of the place is the beach which comprises of golden sands, palm trees and sapphire sea. This site is a hit among swimmers. This beach is well-known for ‘sight for swimmers’. Poets usually come to this place to pen some poems – this is the true magic of Rishikonda beach.


Rishikonda was once ruled by the Eastern Ganga King, Surya Vamsi as well as the Gajapati kings.
The archaeological evidence unearthed that during the 11th and 12th centuries, the Eastern Ganga kings of Odisha constructed quite a few temples here. This place was known for paddy, coal, ivory, iron ore and textile, which were introduced by European merchants from Holland, France and the East India Company during the reign of the British in India.

The best time to travel would be after the month of September till around the start of the monsoons. Autos and buses are the best way to travel from the area to other parts of the city of Vizag.

Things to do

Rishikonda is a palm-fringed beach and offers a great view of the surrounding areas. There are a number of huts on the beach to allow visitors to enjoy a shaded view of the beach. One should pay a visit to a 14th century temple on Rishikonda beach named Sapta Rusheswara Temple. The temple follows entry timings and can be visited during the day.


One of the most interesting aspects of the beach is Ant Hill.

The best way to get around the area is by auto rickshaw or bus. Once around the beach area, tourists are advised to walk in order to explore the region better.

How to Reach

  • There are flights which function regularly from major cities to Vishakhapatnam. The airport is around 15 km from Rishikonda beach. Flights from Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad and Kolkata converge here.
  • The city is also well-connected by rail. Chennai-Howrah rail link and Howrah-Secundrabad link connects Vizag with other cities in India.
  • Various states like Odisha and Madhaya Pradesh are well-connected to Vishakhapatnam through a well-developed road network. There are private and public transport buses ply on the National Highway Number 5 to allow tourists to reach Rishikonda beach.

Kondakarla Ava Beach – The village is located around a few minutes away from Rishikonda and is known for its freshwater lakes.

Victory at Sea War Memorial – This memorial was built in 1996 in order to commemorate the victory of Indian Navy’s Eastern Naval Command against the Pakistan Navy.

Submarine Museum – It is the only submarine museum in Asia.
