Naukuchiatal is commonly referred to as the ‘lake of nine corners’. It is among the famous hill stations in Nainital located in Uttarakhand. The lake is around 175 feet deep and is located at around1220 metres above sea level. The lake offers stunning views of the surrounding areas comprising of trees and shrubs. It is also the deepest lake among the other lakes in the Nainital region of 40.3 metres, and stretches for a length of 983 metres with a breadth of 693 metres. The lake is surrounded by a beautiful valley which offers tourists and locals the opportunity to indulge in angling and bird watching. There is also the opportunity for rowing, paddling or yachting. The lake receives its water from an underground perennial spring.

Naukuchiatal is used to tourists but it can fool you into believing you are the only one here. Local legend has it that anyone who can sight the nine corners of Naukuchiatal all at once will find their way to heaven.

Hindi and Kumaoni languages are the mostly spoken languages in this area.

Naukuchiatal is famous for the escape music festival which takes place once a year and is attended by throngs of people.

Adventure lovers should undertake the trek to Naina or China Peak which is the highest point in the region. A hiking trip there will take around 60 minutes and is not very tiring. One can also catch a panoramic view of the snow-capped Himalayas further north.

Boating in Naukuchiatal is quite amgical, partiularly if you hoose to do so in the early or afternoon.

The walk aroun the periphery of the lake takes n all of Naukuchiatal , winding past the jetty, the resorts, pretty country cottages and the tiny temple on the lake's shore.

The resorts here offer a variety of soft adventure activities.

One should also take the time to visit Neem Karoli Baba Ashram & Temple, Kainchi, a famous Hindu temple which is dedicated to Shri Neem Karoli Baba, a famous Hindu saint and Guru.

Getting Around

There are a few cycle rickshaws which operate in the town and can be found near the Mall Road. However, the best way to explore Nainital is on foot. The mall road is blessed with smooth pavements that make it pedestrian-friendly.

During summer, traffic is barred from entering the upper mall road from around 6 to 9PM, making it perfect for pedestrians to walk.

How to Reach

  • Flying to Nainital is the best and fastest way to to reach the hill station. The hill station is located proximate to PantNagar Airport which is situated around 2 hours away.
  • The nearest railway station is at Kathgodam which is located around 75 kms away
  • There are daily bus services which ply from Delhi to Nainital. However, there are a number of highways which connect Delhi to the location.

Snow View offers a picturesque view of the Naina Devi Peak. A place called Mountain Magic offers gaming facilities for children

St. John in the Wilderness in Mallital is a quaint church founded by the Bishop of Calcutta.

Sariyatal is a famous stream located on Kaladhungi Road. The water here is very cold but is a prime picnic spot.

One of the main attractions here is paragliding. Pandeygaon, only a few minutes from Naukuchiatal, is a hilltop meadow that serves as the launching pad. While paragliding at Naukuchiatal due to inexperience of some operators.
