Elephant Beach

Elephant Beach is located north from the famous Radhanagar beach and is among the famous tourist beaches in India. In 2004, after the onslaught of the tsunami, the shoreline was swept away and the beach is now a fraction of what it was in the past. However, the coral found on the beach is the best anywhere in India, thereby making it suitable for snorkelling. The beach is located in a remote corner of Havelock Island. Therefore, in order to reach it, one will have to either take a boat or undertake a small trek. The beach is renowned for its pristine beauty as well as its picturesque surroundings. Tourists can enjoy the sapphire coloured waters, gentle waves, bare trees and expanding horizon.

Travel Tips

The beach is usually crowded in the morning till around lunch time. After lunch, the tourists start returning back to their boats. This is the best time to visit the beach if you are looking for some privacy. Always remember to pack water and foods, even if it is coconut and bhel puri.

The best time to visit the beach is between October and May where one can enjoy good weather which is conducive for a vacation. Travel during the monsoons should be avoided owing to torrential rainfall.

Scuba diving is also a famous adventure sport. Since most of the diving sites are not close together, most of the dives take place in the morning till around lunch time. Take the time to go on a trip on the speed boat with the local fishermen to the mangroves which are located nearby. Fishing is also another great option with the fishermen actually taking the time to prepare the fishing lines for tourists.

Getting Around

Auto rickshaws are also available on the main roads or near the market area. One can also hire a scooter, bicycle or motorcycle from the main centre in the town. However, one would need to bargain for a good price. There are A/c and non-a/c taxis which one can hire; however, they can get quite expensive.
