Brief

Karwar is a well-known city in Uttara Kannada districtKarnataka state, India. Karwar lies on the west coast of Southern India right near the mouth of the Kali River. Karwar creates a natural harbour which serves as a protection against the monsoon weather. Karwar is also a centre for agriculture, manufacturing as well as tourism.

Karwar harbour was used by Arab, Dutch, Portuguese, French and later British merchants. During World War II, Karwar was used as a naval training site.

The best way to explore the region is walking. However, autos, taxis and bicycles for rent are also available.

Things to do

One of the best things to do is visit the beautiful beaches that are located proximate to the town, namely the Devbagh Beach and Rabindranath Tagore Beach. Tourists can engage in water sports like banana boat riding and snorkelling.

 
Getting Around

One can get around in the town in an auto rickshaw or car. Tourists can also rent a boat to visit some of the islands in the vicinity. For the environment-conscious, bicycles can also be rented. Bicycles in the standard non-geared and MTBs are available for hire.

How to Reach

  • The nearest airport is at Dabolim Airport (IATA: GOI) (Goa) which is 97 kms north. Also, from Margao, there are trains and buses to Karwar.
  • Karwar is connected to Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Mangalore, Cochin and other important cities in India through the Konkan Railway.
  • There are overnight deluxe buses available from Bangalore. Buses also operate between Madgaon and Karwar at regular intervals. There are local buses to Gokarna as well, so you can connect easily if going from Goa to Gokarna

 
Surrounding Attractions

There are a number of nearby beaches, islands and mangroves which are located proximate to the Kali River. Also, one can pay a visit to the war ship museum and a wonderful aquarium located nearby.

Other nearby attractions can be found in Kumta - 75 kms away, Honavar - 95 kms away and Gokarna - 75 kms away
