Hirakud is a small township which is situated in the Sambalpur District in Odisha. The village came into the national spotlight and gained popularity in 1956 when the Hirakud Dam was constructed, which then cleared the road for industrial growth in an area which was always regarded as a rustic township. This town is now known for being industrialized with some of the largest companies here including HINDALCOHirakud Dam has the vast potential for irrigation and hydroelectric power production. Over the years, it has also attracted tourists as it also one of the largest manmade artificial lakes in Asia while also being one of the largest dams globally.

Things to do

There are a number a of things to do and beautiful places to see in and around Hirakud like Budharaja Temple, Ghanteshwari Temple, Huma Leaning Temple as well as the Pradhan Path Waterfall.

Also, one can take a tour of a few national parks in the area like Ushakoti National Park and Debrigadh National Park, among others. Tourists should also visit Samleswari Temple – a famous temple known for its architecture as it was built by the Chauhans during the middle of the 16th century.

  • The nearest airports are Swami Vivekananda Airport in Raipur (262 km) and Biju Patnaik Airport in Bhubaneswar (325 km)
  • There are three main railways stations namely Sambalpur City Station, Sambalpur Road Station and Khetrajpur Station. Khetrajpur is the most significant station.
  • Hirakud is well-connected to most of India�s major cities like Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Bhubaneswar, and Visakhapatnam. There are night buses available from other parts of Odisha to Hirakud.

 
Surrounding Attractions

One should pay a visit to Huma near Sambalpur where the Vimaleswar Temple can be found. The main temple is tilted in one particular direction while the smaller temples are tilted the other way.

 

The Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary is a beautiful forested area that is home to some exotic and rare migratory birds during the winter. One can catch a glimpse of animals including deer, antelope, sloth bears, langur monkeys and tigers, among other animals.

 

Badrama National Park is also a popular tourist spot. One can find tigers, elephants, sambers, and leopards here in the midst of the deciduous forests. The wildlife in the part can be viewed from watchtowers near the watering holes.
