Baruva is a famous village and beach resort situated proximate to Sompeta in Srikakulam districtAndhra PradeshIndia. This region serves as the confluence of the Mahendra Tanaya River with the Bay of Bengal.

Baruva was used as an important during the British rule in India till 1948. There was a ship which was carrying goods which sank in this region in July 1917. To commemorate this unfortunate incident, a pillar was constructed, which is now a famous monument in the region. The harbour does not function anymore but the old lighthouse which can be found in the area operated till the year 2000. However, a new light house was constructed close to a famous beach resort in the area. Baruva's famous beach is among the oldest in Andhra Pradesh.

The best time to visit Baruva is during winter (from November – February). Summers can get unbearably hot and is not conducive to travelling.

There are quite a few tourist destinations at Baruva Beach which have caught the fancy of the trevellers who visit the region. The two important temples in this region include the Durga Temple or the other temples in the region - Kotilingeswara Swamy Temple and Janardhana Swamy Temples. One can also experience and learn more about the coconut nursery and coir industry which sets Baruva apart.

There are a number of restaurants and nightclubs which are open till quite late in the night for the benefit of the tourists.

Getting Around

One of the best ways to get around this town is by bus. Public and private buses ply from Baruva to Srikakulam. Taxis and auto rickshaws also function from the town to the beach or the outer reaches of the main area. Cars can also be hired.

  • One of the best ways to reach this place is by flight because the nearest airport is at Vishakapatnam. Inter-state buses run to and from the airport, thereby making the commute easier for tourists.
  • The Durga Baruva railway station is located near the beach on the Howrah-Chennai mainline. Passenger trains function from Palasa towards Khurda Road station.
  • There are buses which ply from the Baruva APSRTC bus station, connecting other towns and areas in the state.
