Somnath, located in Gujarat is famous for its shore temple which is visited by throngs of pilgrims throughout the year. It is known to be the first jyotilinga in the world. A fair is held every year owing to the birth of Kartikeya, Shiva’s son. Therefore, during that period, thousands of devotees converge at the place to offer prayers on the banks of the Arabian Sea.

The temple is said to be extremely auspicious especially for people who are suffering from diseases that cannot be cured easily. By touching the linga present in the temple, one is usually healed of his/her illness. The first temple in Somnath is said to have been built around 500 AD. As the temple grew in importance, it was patronized by the many devotees who visit it during the year. The temple was destroyed during the Mughal rule in India but was restored. The remains of the old temple are preserved in a museum and is open for public viewing.
