Puri, the holiday destination for most tourists and a bustling city in Orissa, is famous for its vibrant and packed streets, quaint and bright houses and a slew of colonial buildings which add a certain charm to the city. One of the lasting features in Orissa would have to be the Jagannath Temple which towers over the city and dominates the skyline. The long beach coast stretch is usually crowded through the year with swimmers and sun bathers during the peak season time. Another important time in the city’s calendar would have to be Rath Yatra, where throngs of devotees join in on the celebrations.

Historically, Puri was an obscure outpost and was the link between the South and the East of India. The Hindu reformer, Shankarachary, put the city on the map. It soon came to be known as a centre of learning and teaching. He was also responsible for establishing one of the four mathas here.

Travel Tips

Puri is a tourist destination and pilgrimage spot. Therefore, one has to keep in mind that reservations for good hotels will need to be made in advance to avoid the mad rush. Cycle rickshaws are easily available and preferred mode of transport. While autos are also available, they are scarcely found in certain areas. The period during the Rath Yatra is the busiest in the city as it is teeming with pilgrims from around the country. Tourists are advised to avoid visiting the city during the festival, and if they do, are cautioned to wear comfortable clothing and footwear.

Things to do

Puri is home to the famous Jagannath Mandir. The jet-black God with large, white eyes is popular in the state. In fact, figures of the deity are regularly adorned in new clothes in various shrines that can be found in Orissa.

The temple was constructed in the 12th century and is quite impressive when it comes to its Kalinga architecture. There are quite a few temples which can be found within the temple complex as well.

A visit to Model Beach is also among the fun things to do when in Puri. The 700m stretch of sand is clean and a hit among tourists and locals. The beach forms part of a sustainable effort by a tourism initiative by Barefoot.

A heritage tour around Puri is a great way to appreciate the city. Around 75 cycle-rickshaw drivers escort tourists around the city on a fixed price and provide an unforgettable journey to some famous heritage sites in the city.
