Gopalpur is a town in the southern part of Orissa. It was an erstwhile commercial port but has since become a famous holiday destination and tourist spot with hundreds visiting it every year. The town, especially its port, lies in ruins but was once a major trading port. From humble beginnings as a quaint fishing village, it grew to prominence during the British rule in India. Gopalpur was once recognized as a vibrant and exciting place to visit owing to the British settlers there. The town is now quiet and relaxed and is great for a weekend getaway, especially for tourists from eastern India. The vast expanse of deep blue sea, the large jetties that function as well as the line of cashew trees lends to this beachside town a distinct charm.

In the afternoons, one can catch the sight of fishermen returning to the shore with their catch which they then sell to the local markets. If you are in luck, you might also catch a view of the many red crabs that roam the beach during the day – a real treat for the eyes.

Travel Tips

Since Gopalpur is a tourist destination, one would need to book tickets and make hotel reservations in advance to avoid any disappointments. Also, avoid carrying too many valuables on the trip as it could get stolen considering the crowds of people that visit it every year.

Avoid visiting the beachside location during the monsoon season as it is prone to heavy flooding and cyclones.

Avoid visiting the beach after 5 pm to avoid the incoming high tide which can be quite dangerous, especially for children.

Temperatures range from 32 degrees in summer to 17 degrees in winter.
