Undulating hills all around you, covered by a carpet of greenery. The land that has been known since the time of the Hindu mythological epic Mahabharata that is Chikhaldara for you. The beautiful hill station is situated in the Amravati district of Maharashtra. Given that the name means ‘paradise’ it is quite an apt name for the district in which the hill station of Chikhaldara is located. Rising up to a height of 1118m, this is the only hill resort in the entire Vidarbha region. Also, this is the only place in Maharashtra where coffee is cultivated. Chikhaldara thus exhibits the relation between man and nature to an extent that few others can match.

 
Travel Tips

The best time to visit Chikhaldara is between the months of October and June. During this period the temperature is quite moderate. However, you should be careful to book your accommodations well in advance as otherwise you might find it difficult to get a place to stay. The hill station gets quite crowded during tourist seasons.

Things to do

If you are travelling to Chikhaldara, you can be rest assured that you are never going to experience even a moment’s dullness. The hill resort is packed with places that you can visit and things that you can to. If you just want to take in the beauty of your surroundings, there are three points from which you can do so. You can go to Prospect Point, Hurricane Point, or Devi Point and get lost in the scenic beauty all around you. The forest in this region is quite well known for its varied species of animals and plants. You are quite likely to spot a leopard or a sloth bear. Other animals that can be seen here are tiger, sloth bear, blue bull, spotted deer, langur, pangolin, porcupine, flying squirrel, four-horned antelope, Indian bison and barking deer. Of course, the list is far from exhaustive. The hills are also covered by forests of kusum, bamboo, tiwas, and teak trees. If you are thinking that natural wonders are all that you can expect from Chikhaldara, then you are going to get a pleasant surprise. The hilly region has a number of famous historical forts amongst the tourist spots, notable one being Gawligad Fort. Another place to visit is Bhim Kund where according to Mahabharat, Bhim is supposed to have washed his hand after killing Kichaka. Also, if you happen to visit the place in the month of December, make sure that you visit the Chikhaldara Festival. The festival is the showpiece event which exhibits the culture, art and rituals of the region.

 
Getting Around

Getting around Chikhaldara is nothing difficult, despite being a hilly region. The place has been developed for a long period as a tourist destination. Thus you can get public transports quite easily. You can also rent cars from the local car rental services. The local tourist agencies can also help you in that regard. As the places to visit are located all over the place, it will be convenient to have a car at our disposal.

How to Reach

  • The nearest airport to Chikhaldara is located at Nagpur. Flights can be taken to there from any of the major airports in India. From the airport, you can either take a bus or hire a cab and reach the hill station. The distance is around 230 km.
  • The nearest rail station to Chikhaldara is at Badnera. From the station you can go to Chikhaldara by cab or hired car. Tickets can be obtained from sites like makemytrip.com, yatra.com, and irctc.in.
  • There are frequent and regular buses that leave for Chikhaldara from other parts of the state. You can board the buses from either Amravati, or Nagpur. Also, if you want to hire a car and go there, you can take Mumbai-Chikhaldara road, or Nagpur-Chikhaldara road.

 
Surrounding Attractions

While Chikhaldara itself has plenty of places for you to visit, the surrounding regions also have a number of places of tourist attraction. You can go to the Melghat Tiger Reserve. Part of the tiger project, it is also a biodiversity hotspot and you can catch a glimpse of several endangered species of animals. Wan Sanctuary, Gugamal Wildlife Sanctuary and Dhakana–Kolkaz National Park are also within driving distance and well worth visiting. You can also go and take a look at the coffee plantations, the only ones in all of Maharashtra. Shakkar Lake, Dharkhura, and Kalapani Dam are some other places you might consider visiting. You can also go and take a look at the ancient Vairat Devi temple. You have to use ropeways to get to the temple.
