Spread across the terrain of Chhotanagpur Plateau, BadalkholWildlife Sanctuary is one of the most prominent destinations for nature lovers and animal enthusiasts. It is locatednear the city of Jashpur in the state of Chhattisgarh. The park extends over a vast area, amounting to almost 120 sq. km. in all. Badalkhol Wildlife Sanctuary has the distinction of being one of the major wildlife sanctuaries in the country. The park gives sanctuary to a large number of endangered animals. The wildlife sanctuary here is one of the most perfect examples of man trying to preserve the creations of nature in their natural habitat.

 
Travel Tips

The best time to visit Badalkhol National Park is between the months of November and June. Due to the tropical temperature, it is quite cold in winter and you should carry adequate warm garments. If you are visiting during summer, light cotton garments should do.

Things to do

The wildlife sanctuary at Badalkhol is famous for the different varieties of animals that can be found here. Thus, if you are planning to trip to Badalkhol, you can rest assured that you will have plenty of animal sightings to keep you occupied. If you visit the sanctuary just after the monsoon season, you will be treated to the sight of large number of animals flocking to get a drink from one of the waterholes in the park. The animals that you can expect to see during your trip here are Chausingha, Nilgai, Sambhar, wild boar, jackal sloth bear, and hyena. Chinkara, deer, gazelle and the spotted deer are amongst the other animals that you can spot roaming around in the forest. Apart from animals, the park also gives sanctuary to different species of birds, both Indian as well as migratory in nature. Peacock, pigeon, quail, fowl, parrot and storkare some of the various types of birds that throng to the forest. The park also hosts several tigers and leopards. However, these are quite difficult to spot as the number has dwindles in recent years.

 
Getting Around

You can get around Badalkhol quite easily. The place is not very crowded and as such the perfect way to explore Badalkhol is to take long walks down the roads. There are public transports as well. Buses, both government and private, ply at regular intervals. You can also rent cabs in case you want to go to the other towns in the vicinity.

 
Places to Stay

If you are planning to visit the Badalkhol Wildlife Sanctuary, you can get a taste of living in one of the forest guest houses. It is one of the attractions of a trip to the national park here. You will be able to see the animals up close.  However, if you are planning to stay in a hotel, there are quite a few good hotels in the region for you to choose from. Hotel Allnear is one of the most popular hotels in the vicinity. The rent is also quite reasonable. You can get a room for upwards of Rs.700 for one night. Hotel Midtown is another hotel which is quite close to the park. The hotel is quite popular amongst the tourists both for the quality of service provided as well as the budget friendly rent. You can book your accommodations here for the rent of Rs.600 a room for one night. Hotel Mahima is also quite popular amongst the tourists who visit Badalkhol. There are other lodges and guest houses that you can look into if you want to stay a bit away from the crowd. The local tourist agencies can help you to find suitable accommodations.

 
How to Reach

  • The nearest airport is at Raipur, in case you want to take a plane. Regular flights from Delhi, Lucknow and other important cities in the country leave for Raipur. From the airport, you can cover the remaining part of the journey either by renting a car, or taking a cab from outside the station. There are direct buses that leave for Jashpur from the airport.
  • If you are planning to book your seat in a train, you should get off at Raigarh, the nearest important railway station. The station is connected to the other major stations in Chattishgarh. You can get details of the train as well as do the booking through sites like irctc.in, makemytrip.com, and yatra.com. The train fare should be between Rs.1500 and Rs.3000 if you are coming from another state. Train journey within the state will cost you around Rs.300.
  • Badalkhol can be reached from the surrounding places like Bhilai, Raipur, Bastarby bus or by car. The roads are quite well developed and cars for the journey can be hired easily from a local tourist agency or car rental service. There are also a number of buses that leave for Jashpur at regular intervals. The buses are state run as well as private. Fare depends on the type of bus you chose to board.

During your trip to Badalkhol, there are several other places that you can pay a visit to. KotebaraEb River is one of the popular tourist spots. The river bank is known for its scenic beauty. It is also a popular picnic spot. The waterfall at Rajpuri is well worth visiting. Also, do not forget to make a trip to the KailashGupha. It is curved out of the mountains and is known for its magnificent architecture. Bel Mahadev is a nearby cave. It is of religious importance. The place attracts huge number of devotees during the festival of Mahashivratri.
