Shirdi is a small town located in the state of Maharashtra. It is also one of the holiest places for people with a spiritual bent of mind. The epicenter of the Shirdi pilgrimage, this is the town where Sai Baba spent a substantial part of his life. One of the most revered saints in India, Sai Baba epitomized religious tolerance and humanistic values which transgressed caste, creed and class. Often called the “Child of God,” Sai Baba spent a large part of his life here, including his last breath. Sai Baba’s presence can be felt all over the town of Shirdi. Located a little way off from Nashik, this town is filled with places Sai Baba had visited and left an indelible impact on. The Temple complex here is perhaps the most important of all the pilgrimage destinations. The temple was being built by a rich man who hailed from Nagpur, to b dedicated to Lord Kirshna, one of the principal Hindu deities. Sai Baba’s last remains were put here after his death in 1918, and many pilgrims from all over the world come here to pay respect to the departed life of this saint. There is a life-size statue of Sai Baba in the temple complex, and every Thursday, there are special rituals conducted in honor of the saint.

Dwarkamayee Masjid is another important destination in Shirdi for devotees. Sai Baba had spent a substantial part of his life here. Every evening, he would light lamps in the mosque, and the tradition in continued even today. A large stone which Sai Baba used to sit on has also been preserved with the mosque grounds. A life size portrait of the saint is kept in the mosque as a mark of honour, and the Dhuni or the lamp is lit every evening, after which the ashes from the fire gets distributed amongst the pilgrims.

Chavadi is a small house which is located very close to the Masjid. Every other night, Sai Baba would sleep here and all his memorabilia is still preserved. The seat on which he used to sit is still there. The wooden plank and the wheelchair which the saint owned have also been preserved, and he was so fond of this place that after his death, his body was bathed here before the funeral. Lendibagh is another important pilgrimage site. This is where Sai Baba would sit and meditate for hours. He used to light a lamp in earthenware which is named Nandadeep. He had also created a small garden here which is tended to, and looks as beautiful as ever.

Gurusthan is where Sai Baba was spotted for the first time in Shirdi. The spot here is commemorated with a huge portrait of the saint where devotees come and pay their respects. Khandoba Temple is also a spiritual marker of Sai Baba’s presence. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, and it is here that the priest of the temple had first given the saint the name of Sai by using it to ask him to come inside. This temple is also one of the oldest is Shirdi.

You should also go visit the Dixit Wada Museum in Shirdi. This place is filled with artifacts from Sai Baba’s life. From the long robes he wore, to his walking stick, and other things which he used, or which were significant in his life are all carefully preserved and showcased here. His smoking pipe, his purses, and other small and big belongings are kept here, for devotees to come and look at.

How to Reach

  • The closest Airport to Shirdi is the one at Aurangabad. Shirdiâs own airport is currently being built. From Aurangabad, one must proceed by road.
  • Shirdi has its own railway station which is connected to the rest of the state quite well.
  • Aurangabad is 126 kilometers away from Shirdi, Nashik is 112 Kilometers away, and Pune is 183 kilometers away. Buses and taxis ply from various parts of Maharashtra to this holy destination.

Nashik, which is only 112 kilometers away, is also a wonderful spiritually significant town in Maharashtra. Also close to Shirdi are the Ajanta and Ellora caves. Filled with ancient Hindu and Buddhist art, these caves are gorgeous to look at.
