Mehrangarh Fort

Meharangarh fort is the biggest fort in Rajasthan. The fort has withstood many a batttle, as is evident today from the maks of cannonballs on the fort walls. Located in the city of Jodhpur, the fort at Mehrangarh is testament to the mighty Rajput clans of Rajasthan. The majestic fort built by Rao Jodha in the year 1459. Mehrangarh Fort is one of the largest forts in India. It is in fact the most important fort in Jodhpur, and amongst the grandest forts in all of Rajasthan, being second only to the fort at Chitore. The mighty fort has seven gates, including the famous Jayapul Gate built by Maharaja Man Singh, and the Fattehpul Gate built by Maharaja Ajit Singh to commemorate various victories. The fort is known for its architectural splendor and magnificent buildings.

Mehrangarh Fort is the best example of Rajput architecture in its heyday. Guarded by seven mighty gates, the fort presents a daunting sight as it overlooks the city of Jodhpur. Within the fort you will find several marvelous palaces. The Moti Mahal or the Palace of Pearls is the most magnificent of the period rooms that can be found in the fort. It has intricately built corridors and several hidden balconies.

Another spot of great tourist attraction is the Sheesha Mahal or the Palace of Glass. The interior is entirely laid with tiny shards of glass and is a brilliant example of typical Rajput sheesh Mahal. The Phool Mahal is the perfect example of splendor and magnificence. It housed the private chambers of the kings and chambers of pleasure. The Daulat Khana houses some of the best examples of paintings and fine arts from the Mughal period. This is also the place where the remains of Emperor Akbar are kept. DO not forget to visit the armoury. The building houses specimens of arms and armours from every period in the history of the fort. It also has several swords belonging to famous personalities like Akbar, and Timur the Lame.

Getting Around

The city of Jodhpur is quite well developed and getting around is fairly easy. The public transport system is quite good. There are plenty of buses. You can also move about by renting a car. Car renting services are fairly numerous and comes at a reasonable price.

Buses are of various types, from luxury AC ones to non-ac ones. The fare varies accordingly. The distance between Jodhpur and Delhi can be covered by a few hours drive.
